Learn law in the classroom. Learn how to be a lawyer in the courtroom.
For over 50 years, students like you have run the Law Students’ Legal Advice Program (LSLAP). LSLAP volunteers assist over 1,000 British Columbians each year with legal issues such as residential tenancy, small claims, human rights claims, and criminal law. Don’t just learn the law, learn how to be a lawyer. Gain skills in client relations, file management, legal research, document drafting, oral advocacy, and more. Whatever you’re interested in, there is space on the team for you.
What does LSLAP do?
LSLAP is the largest private provider of free legal services in British Columbia and the largest student group at Allard Law. We providing essential legal services to low-income individuals around Metro Vancouver who would otherwise be unable to afford a lawyer. Our legal clinic is not a student or Allard club, but a professional organization with a massive alumni network around Vancouver and Canada.
What will you learn?
As a member of LSLAP, you will gain essential legal skills and put what you learn in class into practice by working on real files under the supervision of our lawyers. LSLAP offers training in skills not addressed in the classroom, such as client management, file tracking, courtroom etiquette, and filing procedure. At LSLAP, you will learn how to run a file from start to finish, preparing you for work in the legal field and giving you invaluable skills for employment.
We offer a low barrier to entry with a big responsibility, as you will be taking on real clients, real problems, and real files. But don't worry, we provide wrap-around support and institutional mentorship to ensure your success. Supervising lawyers, student executives, clinic heads, and community partners all ensure students receive the support they need to provide high quality services.
